What materials can we use in the construction of our roof?
Seeing many constructions on roofs that exist both in our city of Aigio, and in many parts of Greece, we can observe the many differences that exist in the way they are constructed as well asin what has been used as building materials on roofsthese and draw useful conclusions.
Roof tiles
In many cities of Greece we have seen impressive roofs on neoclassical buildings, in which they have been used from the beginning asroof construction material, roof tiles. We also see tiles on most of the roofs of newer and older buildings, houses, etc., both in coastal areas and in semi-mountainous and mountainous areas. Tiles are clearly the dominant roofing material from ancient times to the present day.

In many areas of our country and almostin all traditional settlements, the construction of a roof with tiles has been mandatory for yearsin all buildings. This has been established, among other things, to preserve the tradition of these settlements, without altering their traditional color. In other words, roof coverings with other roofing materials other than tiles are not allowed.
Given the many other advantages that tiles have, for this reason, they are most often preferred as the basic roofing material. The only thing that changes, depending on the geographical area, is the color and shape of the tiles.
In many old buildings throughout Greece, we see that there are still roofs in very good condition, with tiles that were installed a century or two ago or even in much earlier times.
On the roofs of old buildings, we see that there are tiles from various Greek industries that have unfortunately closed many years ago and no longer exist, but which have left a long history behind them.
Such tiles are the Allatini tiles from Thessaloniki, the Dilaveri tiles from Piraeus, the tiles of Keramourgis Vassilikos Chalkida, the tiles of Elefas Chios, the tiles of Kerameia Aigio, the tiles of the 8 brothers of Sapunas of Larissa, etc.

Ανάλογα με την γεωγραφική περιοχή και τη χρήση του ακινήτου, επιλέγουμε το πάχος των τραπεζοειδών πάνελ έτσι ώστε να πετύχουμε τη μόνωση που θέλουμε.
In lowland areas, 3cm and 4cm thick panels are used, while in mountainous areas, we use 5cm or thicker panels, in order to have the desired thermal insulation on our roof.
The endurance ofquality polyurethane panelsin the mountains, it is great because they offer thermal insulation and reliably cope with the difficult conditions of the mountainous regions.
Of course, their price per square meter is much higher than tiles.
The main disadvantage of the panels is that very close to the sea, serious oxidation problems can occur. This can also be created by failures when placing them on the roofs.
Φυσικά δεν αποτελούν εξαίρεση στο πρόβλημα αυτό, ούτε οι λαμαρίνες με σχήμα κεραμιδιών, που τα τελευταία χρόνια χρησιμοποιούνται ευρέως σε πολλές στέγες, λόγω χαμηλότερου κόστους σε σύγκριση με τα πάνελ, της μικρής κλίσης που απαιτείται στη στέγη που πρόκειται να τοποθετηθούν, όπως επίσης και του μικρού τους βάρους.
On the contrary, in lowland, semi-mountainous and mountainous areas, both polyurethane panels and good quality tile-shaped sheets present no technical problems, only possible, a dubious aesthetic effect especially in houses.
Κατά την επιλογή του υλικού στέγασης που θα χρησιμοποιήσουμε στην στέγη μας, πρέπει να λάβουμε υπόψη μας το πρόβλημα αυξημένου θορύβου που παρουσιάζεται στις στέγες που έχει τοποθετηθεί πάνελ κεραμιδιού ή πάνελ τραπεζοειδές ή κάθε είδους λαμαρίνα, όταν υπάρχει χαλαζόπτωση ή δυνατή βροχόπτωση.
Τα μήκη της λαμαρίνας παραδίδονται ανάλογα με το βήμα του διαμορφωμένου τύπου κεραμιδιού. Στις λαμαρίνες με σχέδιο γαλλικό κεραμίδι το βήμα είναι ανά 33cm, ενώ στα ρωμαϊκά το βήμα είναι ανά 35cm. Eπίσης, υπάρχει η δυνατότητα παράδοσής τους και σε μεγάλα μήκη (μονοκόμματα φύλλα) πράγμα που βοηθάει στις στέγες που δεν έχουν μεγάλες κλίσεις, γιατί έτσι αποφεύγονται οι ενώσεις.
Εκτός από τις λαμαρίνες με σχέδιο γαλλικού και ρωμαϊκού κεραμιδιού, υπάρχουν και οι κλασικές γαλβανιζέ κυματοειδείς και τραπεζοειδείς λαμαρίνες για επικαλύψεις στεγών. Παράλληλα με τις κλασικές γαλβανιζέ λαμαρίνες, συνεχίζουμε να διαθέτουμε και έγχρωμες λαμαρίνες τραπεζοειδείς και κυματοειδείς.

Για τους ίδιους λόγους, οι ίδιες επιβαρύνσεις, αλλά σε μικρότερο ποσοστό, ισχύουν στο κόστος κατασκευής και στις τρίριχτες στέγες (δηλαδή στις στέγες με τρεις κλίσεις).
Asphalt tiles
One moreAsphalt tiles are an alternative choice for roofing materials.Asphalt tiles are available in a wide variety of colors and designs. The usual designs of bituminous tiles are rectangular, circular (scale), rhombus, etc.
In order to have sufficient thermal insulation on the roof we build with bituminous tiles, a special wooden construction must precede, i.e. a construction with a double layer for the installation of the insulating material (FIBRAN- rock wool- mineral wool etc.).
Despite thespecialized technique required, for the correct construction of a roof with asphalt tiles, it is worth emphasizingtheir main advantage is their light weight.
Asphalt tiles have been used as roofing materials for many decades with absolute success in waterproofing the roof, in many northern European countries (Finland, Sweden, Italy, Austria, Baltic countries, etc.).
During the construction of a roof with bituminous tiles, the appropriate materials should be used, i.e., among others, the special glue for welding the bituminous tiles as well as the special flathead galvanized nails suitable for bituminous tiles.
The price of asphalt tiles of good quality with durability is more expensive than the price of tiles, per square meter.
Other options in roofing materials
Another onealternative solution to roofing materialswith the main criteria being the low economic cost, is the use on the roofasphalt pavements with red, gray or white tiles. This solution is clearly cheaper.
Τα ρολά των ασφαλτόπανων είναι 10μετρα Χ 1 μέτρο δηλαδή 10 τετραγωνικά το ρολό. Τα ασφαλτόπανα θα πρέπει να κολληθούν επάνω στο πέτσωμα της στέγης, που θα είναι από μασίφ ξύλο (τάβλα ή μισόταβλα) ή ραμποτέ επένδυση ή OSB κλπ, με την κατάλληλη ειδική κόλλα συγκόλλησης. Αν χρησιμοποιηθούν ασφαλτόπανα, η κλίση της στέγης δεν πρέπει απαραίτητα να είναι μεγάλη.
An economical choice in roofing materials are:ONDULINE corrugated bituminous roofing sheets. These sheets ensure a cheap price and light construction, due to their weight, which is about 6kg per sheet, measuring 200 X 0.95 m.
In closing, we must point out thatany type of roof, whether four-pitched or two-pitched, whatever design is chosen as well as whatever coating material the customer chooses, must be manufactured carefully and according to the rules, by experienced and consistent craftsmen.
It is necessary, depending on the coating material, to use all the necessary supplementary materials, such as those requiredmetal components, thesealing tapesetc, thewaterproofing roof membranes, the appropriategood quality woodwhich must be stored in covered areas, before being sent to your building and not outdoors.
